Biography

Dr Jo Toohey is an experienced radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Concord and Icon Cancer Centre Norwest. Dr Toohey obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of Sydney in 1995. She undertook specialist oncology and palliative care training at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, United Kingdom and Sacred Heart Health Service, Calvary and Prince of Wales Hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Dr Toohey gained further research experience and specialist expertise during a clinical fellowship at North Coast Cancer Institute (NCCI). She holds dual fellowships with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR). 

Dr Toohey remains deeply invested in clinical research and trials, quality improvement and medical education. She worked as a radiation oncology staff specialist at Liverpool Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse from 2007-2017. During her tenure, she was the RPAH Director of Training for advanced radiation oncology trainees and conducted breast cancer translational research as VectorLab Lead Clinician at Lifehouse.

She is actively involved in the teaching and mentoring of medical students and trainees, holding academic appointments at the University of New South Wales and University of Notre Dame. Dr Toohey has acted as principal and associate investigator on several breast and gynaecological cancer clinical trials, authored articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique quality assurance results at national meetings. Prior to joining Icon Cancer Centre, Dr Toohey worked as a senior radiation oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital from 2017-2023.  

Her clinical experience covers a broad range of solid tumour malignancies and advanced technologies, including DIBH and intensity-modulated and volumetric arc therapy (IMRT/VMAT). Dr Toohey has a particular interest in breast cancer, gynaecological cancer, cardio-oncology and palliative radiation therapy.
