Biography

Dr Richard Corkill is an experienced palliative care specialist at Icon Cancer Centre Townsville, bringing over 20 years’ experience in end-of-life care. Born in London, Dr Corkill completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. He commenced specialist oncology training in Devon, United Kingdom and palliative medicine training in New Zealand through the Royal Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine. Dr Corkill worked as a palliative care specialist in New Zealand hospices and in-patient hospitals including North Shore and North Haven Hospice and Waikato Hospital before relocating to Townsville, Queensland in 2014.

Dr Corkill maintains a strong interest in medical education and leadership, actively involved educating and increasing awareness of palliative care for final year medical students. He is also involved in educational opportunities with James Cook University medical students and annual palliative care fundamental courses, study days and conferences. Dr Corkill is Clinical Director of Palliative Care Services Townsville and former Vice President of Palliative Care Queensland.

Dr Corkill has extensive clinical experience in palliative care with a special interest in symptom management, in particular pain management and breast, prostate and lung cancers. He is committed to working collaboratively with his Icon Townsville colleagues to provide patients with the highest level of care and allow them to maintain their quality of life. His service is primarily clinic-based with telephone or videoconferencing consultations during future expansion to in-patient care at the Mater Hospital. Outside Icon, Dr Corkill loves fishing from his kayak, running and swimming and enjoyed water polo and springboard diving even up to a few years ago.
