Biography

Dr Hock-Choong Lai is an experienced clinical haematologist at Icon Cancer Centre Townsville and Icon Cancer Centre Mackay. In 1989 he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the University of Melbourne in 1989. After completing haematology training in New South Wales, Dr Lai completed his Certificate of Specialist Accreditation in Haematology in Singapore in 2000. He subsequently spent three years working in Singapore, first as an associate consultant in the Health Sciences Authority’s Centre for Transfusion Medicine before becoming their head of clinical services. In 1999 he became a fellow of both the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (FRCPA). Dr Lai held visiting consultant positions at Singapore General Hospital and Singapore’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Dr Lai moved back to Australia in 2005 as consultant haematologist at Townsville Hospital’s Cancer Care Centre. He also provides an outreach haematology service in Mackay. Dr Lai is experienced in caring for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant blood disorders with a special clinical interest in stem cell transplantation, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes.
